What Is SEO?

Our definition: Making your website valuable to search engines

Official definition: “A methodology of strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine” (Webopedia).

Origins: SEO didn’t exist before there were websites (1991) or search engines (1993). People started taking SEO seriously around 1997, when the number of live websites hit 1 million.

Search engine optimization is not:

  • Stagnant. Programmers are constantly updating search engines to keep ahead of people using tricks to promote low-quality websites.

  • Meant to be tricky. The goal of search engines is simply to deliver good, relevant content to people looking for it. Unfortunately, the task of sifting through over a billion websites is bound to become a bit complex.

  • A one-time thing. Because search engines are always changing, and because updated content is a key factor in search engine algorithms, SEO is an ongoing task for any website.
